I picked this book up expecting a romance and instead got a beautiful story about how to belong in a community. It was wonderful.
This was a complex heart warming tale. I loved the character development over the book. I did struggle with the almost immediate loss of a pet in this book.
Loved!!! The most delightful book! Grumpy old main character transformation (#GrumpLit) with wonderful supporting characters. I cried multiple times throughout the storyline. Think A Man Called Ove with LGBTQ pride.

Mixed feelings about this one. While I appreciate the notion to celebrate one’s true identity and the hardships one can feel and face trying to work through those in this day an age, I don’t know if it all translated so great in the plot. Cute but meh. 3/5.
I thought this book was very sweet. It’s the kind of stories like these, that show how far we’ve come as a society, that makes me feel happy and have faith in the world.
Albert and the community that he built within the book was incredible. It’s a good book to show that it’s never too late to change!

The more I think about this book, I dislike it more and more. It presents the world in such a way that makes it seem like society is now an all-welcoming, all-inclusive utopia.
The main struggle with Albert is an internal one. At the beginning of the book, Albert chose to be alone, rather than face the music and accept his sexuality. He was lonley. However, as soon as he starts coming out, he is suddenly the happiest he could be and that 50 years of solitude is essentially erased and he gets everything.
I love the idea of celebrating a more open minded world, but I don’t think that’s the reality. Not a single person who Albert encountered wasn’t supportive of Albert and accepted him wholly, many saying things along the lines of “duh.” Albert chose to stay in the closet for 65 years but once he starts coming out it’s as if his fears were irrational and he faces very little conflict.
By the end I felt like the author was shaming all the queer people who have, for whatever reason, chosen to stay closeted. I do believe that coming out can be the most freeing thing in the world for some, but there are people who stay in the closet for safety purposes and not everyone will have support like Albert.
As a queer person who has spent a lot of time alone and a lot of time in the closet, I thought I would connect more with this book. Maybe I just missed the message, but by the end I was just skipping paragraphs to get to the end.

Nope, contemporary romance is still not my cup of tea. Cute though!
