Aaaaa my first Penelope Douglas book and let me tell you it didn’t disappoint. I loved it and although the ending was a bit weird considering all that went on. The book also made me cry a little which is always good.

This is such a "wtf did I just read?" book. I'm seriously dumbfounded. I started reading this because I saw lots and lots of people recommending this so I had high expectations, but then when I actually read it I was like "wtf is this?" Seriously, spare yourselves.

suicide, dubious and non consent, taboo: age gap, abuse and violence (depends on how you see it)

This book was trauma porn. Each character had unnecessarily complex, overly-dark backstories that came to light at very random and awkward times. I found it very hard to get over the fact that the characters had familial ties (but it’s fine cuz he was a STEP uncle *eye roll* still weird) while having super wild sex. The romances felt very forced and stockholm-syndrome-esque with misogynistic undertones. The guy she ends up with is a literal psychopath. The love they have for each other just appears overnight and she magically forgets him RAPING HER ALL THE TIME. This felt problematic and I just didn’t think it was worth the Booktok hype. The sex scenes were hot but I wouldn’t buy it or read it again.

I’m going to be a wet towel about this book. I did not like it — it has so many trigger warnings which is fine because people should make their own choices. However the content in this is disturbing and it didn’t feel like it was purposeful or rewarding. The character arcs felt hollow and I’m ready to forget that I read it.

some parts of this book were uncomfortable to read and overall I didn’t like how the main character was treated and her willingness to forgive men taking advantage of her

Oh, she is problematic but I kind of still liked it?
This book has flaws, mostly hinging around "dubious" consent. I felt uncomfortable more than once because I hate it when characters justify that something isn't rape because "my body was telling him I wanted it, even though I said no". Urgh, so normally a 1 star or DNF for sure. But...
I despise myself a little for acutally really enjoying Credence. Tiernans storyline and character development were so well done. It was heart-warming to witness the scared, secluded girl growing into a confindent woman, who enjoys life and all it has to offers. I also liked how the three men were all so different as people but also in their relationship with Tiernan.
What I probably loved the most though, was the setting. The secluded mountain cabin in the hills, being snowed in months on end and the nature felt so real, I basically smelt the fresh mountain air. The setting is also the main reason for the high rating.
The longer I think about it, the worse I feel for getting aroused by the scenes in this book. I mean, Tiernan is 17 the first time there is a sexual encounter and the men are all 22+. There must be something very wrong with me.
