I absolutely hated the main character and loved the cats. It is pretty realistic, since that is exactly what happens in real life too, 
the killer/abuser gets to live (in prison or even not sometimes), meanwhile the poor animals and wife had to die
.

I love how this in a sense can hint at some sort of personality disorder such a borderline or dipolar. I love the dark psychological message that it's giving oh how love can quickly turn to rage and how the people closest to you (who love you the most) will always suffer the most.

This is a disturbing tale which I think works very well as such a short form story. I like that you are inside the head of someone who is a horrible person who you can't justify the actions of, as it makes a change from most main characters. As with most Poe, if you are easily disturbed this won't be for you and this is one of his more disturbing I'd say.
