My review from reading Toshikazu Kawaguchi's Tales from the Café in 2020 ~ "A very intriguing ghost-like novel of 4 different yet interlinking stories. I am not normally someone who would read this genre of book but I really loved it!"

3 years later and I have now read the next novel by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, Before the coffee gets cold ~ Tales from the Café. Some of the same faces appear in this story as featured in the first book and we learn more about their lives along with the 4 people who come to travel back, or forward, in time, in the hope of sharing one last moment with a friend, a mother, a lover, a wife. Another wonderful set of stories in one cover and I look forward to reading the next instalment.

This was an enjoyable, quick read. The translation is pretty poetic. My biggest gripe is when medical issues are brought up- you can tell the author doesn’t know much about illness/injury, so it’s a good thing those issues are only mentioned in passing. This book shares a handful of stories about visitors to the café and also may inspire you as you consider what you may say or do if you could go back in time for a few minutes to visit someone.

With this following on 6 years after Before the Coffee Gets Cold, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but I loved the old characters still being a main focus as well as new characters being introduced.

All the stories again were so beautiful to read and heartbreaking, each in their own ways. I definitely felt that this book made me more emotional than the first. There were times where things felt a little repetitive again and a bit slow in places, but it soon picked back up and hit you right in the heart!

I loved how we got to know more about the woman in the dress and her history too. It made for an interesting read and something that never even crossed my mind in the first book.

Again, if you are looking for a thought provoking and emotional read, this is the book to choose.

This was such a great sequel. One of the best i’ve read. I absolutely loved the first book and this one gave me the same warm hopeful feeling. We got to learn more about the characters, uncover unfinished ends from the first book, and get some closure on some things. It is such a phenomenal series. It is warm, heartwarming but also sad, and really helps you focus on the good of life and death. I recommend these books to everyone. I think these could be great for anyone with regrets or with loss of a person. I will read these again and again.
