Tiempos pasmosos.

As a child, I remember seeing three books by M. Druon in my mom's bookshelf. Finally this summer I picked up one and read it. Unfortunately my mom only had the last 3 in the series but as each book covers a stand alone time in history of the Capet Kings (during 13century -14th century) it didn't matter. I will definitely pick up the Iron King and read all the books in the series. I loved the political details, the way M. Druon describes the historical figures, making them alive as well as the place they occupy. Almost everyone in Druon's book is flawed and shows more bad qualities than good, but Mahaut, Countess of Artois easily wins the title "arch-villainess". I can see how she may be an inspiration for G. Martin's Cersei.
Towards the end, the story was rushed and given in summaries. That's the only negative I have on this book.

Another excellent part in this series. Each time I follow with interest and amazement the events of so many centuries ago.
M. Druon did an excellent job with his series. I think if more authors wrote history like this, more people would love history.
The series does ask some dedication though. While I have knowledge of French history, each time I need to go study the family tree of these kings.

I like Phillip so much, that I'm almost afraid to read the following books of the saga, since I know that bad things will happen to him...

The 4th book in Maurice Druon's Iron King series, and the most disturbing by a margin of two horrific crimes. Another layer of tragedies are lain on the story's heroes, while the villains see mostly success. This books lays out the boldest schemes of the most ambitious nobles, promising that some will be punished appropriately, but that promise isn't fulfilled before the end of the book. I do intend to pick up the next book in the series, but I'm a little disappointed that the story hasn't included a single happy ending for any significant character yet.

Again with the pedagogy intermixed with the narrative. It reads half as a textbook and half as a novel. Really odd.
