Such a beautiful story - I've underlined so much! Could be considered a modern classic.

It’s not often a book annoys me and entertains me. This one has a special place. The writing style is different. The way the narrator describes colors in moments and how words landed in a room or atmosphere captured me.

No matter what side of war you're on, what your race, religion, ideology. There are no winners in war, we all lose, at the very most a huge chunk of what makes us human.

To think people could stoop so low to belittle one another by following a doctrine of hate and baseless loathe, only humans can be so cruel to commit crimes even death winces at, and only humans can be as stupid as Hans Hubermann to put their previlige aside for their kindness.

I couldn't help feeling an empty sorrow when I was reading the chapters and stories of Death (himself) regarding the concentration camps, the anticlimactic deaths in war and the hollow deaths of those between the two, the gentleness of Death's embrace as he carried their souls in his arms. We often forget how blessed we are to be born at the right place and right time,

Unlike those the Jews that were either treated as subhumans and wished for death and received it as a reward or gave up all "dignity" to live and write their history with their own pens instead of the pens of their oppressors,
Unlike everyone else with a real beating heart who could not bear watch the discriminations being done and obliged to accept it or face a similar fate to the Jews.

As for Zusak's writing style, I love the language and his symbolism with death, the colors and the ending and accepting one's fate, this book is not praised enough.

Couldn't finish it. I found it boring and muddled, whilst the descriptions were odd and confused. I have to say I enjoyed the first couple of chapters, but it all went downhill from there. Do not understand the hype.
