I'm only to chapter two...and i don't think i can do any more...

I've looked up other reviews...few like it. But, it's in a lot of "Best" lists. How does that work.

I'll be honest. I rarely quit a book. I love books. And, I can usually tell within the first few chapters if it's for me or not. Still, not liking to quit books...even more, I hate to admit when I do quit...especially a generally acclaimed "classic".

I'll proclaim it not. I quit "War and Peace" and i highly doubt that I'll ever try again. And I quit Ulysses without giving it much of a chance. I'll leave it to all those who haven't read it and proclaim it wonderful, and to the pedantic insufferable literati...

Just nope.

There is so much in this tome of a book. If you can bring yourself to read it - and that is no easy task - you will find yourself pleasantly rewarded. Joyce's ability to masterfully paint a world interwoven with references and multiple meanings is incredible. One could read this novel one hundred times and learn new things. In this, I am sure I will read this again at some point in my life.
My recommendation before getting into this novel is that you read The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, which is Ulysses's predecessor and prologue, and Homer's works. While not necessary they will help frame the book. A brief history or overview of Ireland and Jewish history is also recommended.

No stars. An utter monstrosity, did not need to be written. Just read Woolf’s essay “On Modernism” and you’ll get the gist. To quote the dudebro in my lit class, it’s “a monument to the male ego”. No, thank you.
