This is the book I would write if I could. Nice people being nice to each other over a lifetime of tribulations. Heart warming

I found this book incredibly hard to read with the way it is written with no quotation marks or paragraph breaks. I nearly put it down at page 93, then finally something interesting was happening in the story. It was a confusing book to understand and a little boring but I do appreciate the incredible writing of this author, it just unfortunately wasn't for me.

A very quaint read, filled with a great cast of characters and sun-dappled imagery. The context of the war and post-war life gave the story more dimension, which I enjoyed. The broad exploration of love, the Italian phrases and the community focus made the book a joy to read.

My only drawback was that each storyline seemed to wrap up very neatly, which hindered the depth of my interest in the stories. I don’t think, however, it’s meant to be a challenging read, so it succeeds as a good little trip to Italy.

A beautiful book that made me desperate to go back to Florence and learn Italian. The setting and characters jump off the page!

Be warned- it is written without punctuation marks, which almost led me to give up on it 10 pages in. I think this meant the early meeting of Ulysses and Evelyn, which is at the centre of the emotional arc of the book, didn’t have as much of an effect on me as it might have done, were I not distracted by the lack of punctuation.
