A strange and interesting read.  This is a complicated world and the reader doesn't get much help understanding it.  The ending is quite abrupt, but probably picks up in the sequel.

head-and-shoulders-above-the-crowd the best book i read this year (tied with Radiance by Catherynne M. Valente; honorable mention to An Unkindness of Shadows by Rivers Solomon). i can't remember the last time i was this intellectually stimulated by any piece of media - this is what they're talking about when they say 'epic' speculative fiction. it absolutely blew me away and will definitely be a book i think about for a long time!
