Hugely informative. A little dense in parts.
had put off reading this for years but ended up devouring it on holiday - such is life…
very thoroughly researched work about the british tomfoolery in west asia during and after ww1, and it is very focussed on british political intrigue (and not strong when looking elsewhere), but given their ultimate dominance of the process this seems to be fitting.
does include a lot of tasty morsels such as britain tripping over their own dick instead of bringing the ottoman empire to surrender at the start of 1915, leading to the gallipoli disaster and 3 more years of war; and how a bunch of british anti-semites ended up supporting zionist settlement in palestine; plus discussing the sellout of palestinian peasantry by their landlords who flogged the land to jewish colonists. a good read to help understand how we ended up here..

An enjoyable read and good introduction to the beginnings of the modern Middle East but the point of view seemed heavily skewed focusing primarily on the perspectives of both the English and the Zionists.

An excellent book that explains the historical context of the political formation of the Middle East in the 20th century. Only issue is that it chooses to focus a lot on Winston Churchill, when it should focus on a figure more central to the region at hand.

Incredibly comprehensive historical retelling of the fall of the Ottoman Empire, and all of the different parts who tried to stop it, or profit from the fallout.
