The story continues. Coryn has acquired the ember, flown to the Great Tree and become the new king. He's learned things about the past thanks to the legends kept hidden away by the now decease Ezylryb. Now, Coryn fears what he knows. His mother, upon reflection, has haggish ways and now Coryn questions as to whether he himself has hagsfiend in him. Soren decides that they need to take a trip to take his mind off of Nyra, but there is more happening around them. The owls of the tree are becoming obsessed with the ember. They want to guard it, worship it, and have select owls be selected to watch over the ember. Dangerous times are ahead, and in more ways than one.
This is a good book and one that my daughter enjoyed me reading to her. The storyline is done well, but there are issues that I have. There seem to be hiccups here and there in the storyline. Coryn queries in his mind about finding his father's bones and "saving" them as Bess does with her father's bones. Why? He already knows because he was there, that his father's bones were burned. So why raise the query?
I have to admit that I was annoyed with Soren thinking that Coryn was becoming self-absorbed and "obsessed" with his potential haggishness because of his mother. I'd expect Soren to be more empathetic. The biggest issues I have with this story are the choices the characters make. I understand the overall reasoning (for the storyline), but it is the low bearing fruit. They choose owls who have specifically voiced that they wish to have select owls to be the Guardians of the Guardians of the Ember. Why? They view themselves as being superior and it was only a matter of time before they instituted their plans. Why were there no checks put in place? Why was no one sent to find the band sooner?
This is a good story, but it's flawed. For that reason, I am rating this book 4 out of 5 stars.

After 11 books, I just couldn't go on. My interest waned to the point where I was avoiding the book.

Much better than the last book, and now that the Band is back together (hello, puns), I’m looking forward to the last few books in this series more than ever.

This book was full of so much suspense and I loved how
the chapters switched back and forth between the Band and the tree, as well as showing how "power hungry" some people can be. I also really like the worldbuilding that goes on and how the characters change in this, especially Madame Plonk.

these books play fast and loose with both time and geography; a bold choice for a book with a map in the front. I know, there are talking owls, why should I care that an relatively short cave system starts in one kindow and ends in another kingdom that doesn't even border the first kingdom?

The Golden Tree continues the story of the owls of the Great Ga'Hoole tree as they engage in another battle with Nyra and her band of bad owls.
