Metro is a typical coming of age hero story.  However, the location is extremely dystopic.  Moscow in 2033 is 20 to 30 years post nuclear carnage.  People live in the Metro tunnels.  Note: when you start to read this google a map of the Moscow metro and then a map of Moscow, by comparing the rail lines to the structures on the surface map you can track our hero's, Artyom, travels.  There is some interesting philosophizing about life's meaning by multiple characters in the book, some is quite interesting and some is just pure horse hokey.  The philosophizing, even by Russian standards, is quite the pile of manure.  The ending brings on the idea of a next work, and I will read 2034 to see how the ideas in 2033 develop.  All in all a good read

Interesting read. I did not expect to find valuable life advice, a scene that feels like the inspiration for 'the las of us', and learn something about my on prejudices.

It reminded me of 'The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared', except with unimaginative, uninformed science fiction and an ending that was predictable from chapter one.
