Audiobook Review:
I should start by saying this book is a definite 5 star story for me. It’s so good. Mia Sheridan writes beautiful, complicated and emotional stories that I can’t help but think about even after I’m done with them. I can’t wait to listen to more of her books!
The reason I gave this 4 stars is because of the male narrator. He doesn’t fit at all. He has what I would describe as a strong New Jersey accent even though Kyland is supposed to be from Kentucky. He also pronounces Kinleigh’s name as kin-lay instead of kin-lee like the female narrator pronounces it. It is super annoying because he says her name a lot. It makes me wonder how such an obvious mistake gets published anyway. He also whispers when he’s trying say something sincere/sweet, but he whispers it so quietly that I literally couldn’t understand him sometimes. Female narrator was top notch, though!

Another BEAUTIFUL story written by Mia Sheridan. Once again I fell in love with the characters! How you do it every time Mia is just astonishing. This book (as well as her others) was heartwarming, sexy, and did I mention beautiful?? Mia has the ability to connect these characters to my heart through her fantastic writing. She knows how to get to the feels every time. I love all the books in this series an this one did not disappoint. Once again, thank you for another fantastic book. I look forward to continue reading your upcoming work:)
Quite simply one of the most beautiful books I have ever read.
this was such a sweet lovely mia sheridan love story. i won’t lie, i was a little unsure when tenleigh came back and it seemed like kyland had a kid (not a big fan of the surprise pregnancy trope and it all felt very similar to a book i had just read) but when it was revealed why kyland did what he did?! oh my god my heart just BROKE for them both. i’m so glad they found each other again and found peace ❤️
Dirt poor. Hillbilly. Backwoods hick. Mountain folk. Tenleigh Falyn struggles each day to survive in the small, poverty-stricken mining town where she lives with her sister and mentally ill mother. Her dream of winning the yearly Tyton Coal scholarship is all that keeps her going. With it, she would get a free ride to a college of her choice and finally escape the harshness of this life. Secure a career that could one day get her family out of Dennville. But Kyland Barrett has worked just as tirelessly to win this scholarship, desperate to leave behind the town that has brought him so much pain. Through near-starvation, deep loneliness, and against all odds, he'll let nothing stand in his way―certainly not the girl who's his main competition. Then, one moment changes everything. Tenleigh and Kyland find themselves turning from strangers to friends, then tipping dangerously close to love. They're both determined not to form any lasting attachment, but the longer they're together, the more hopeless it seems. Only one of them gets to win. Only one of them gets to leave. And when that day comes, what happens to the one left behind?
THIS BOOK. I would give it 5000 stars if I could. After a handful of Mia Sheridan's books, this one skyrocketed to the top as my favorite.
The book starts off with the two main characters in high school, but do not be fooled, this is no YA novel. Roughly half the book takes place at that stage of the MC's lives, and then the book time jumps several years.
This book pulled at my heart strings over and over . I adored and felt for both MC's. They were so young, and dealing with such adult problems and responsibilities. This book shed light on what it is like for people growing up in poverty. I thought Sheridan did such a great job with helping the reader picture the setting, as well as slowly letting each character's story unfold.
The young love between the main characters, and then the sizzling chemistry between them as adults. I could not put this book down.

I was a little disappointed with the last two books in the series so I was hesistiant to read this. Can I just say Mia Sheridan blew me away! I loved loved this book. I wanted to read it as fast as possible, I coulndt put it down but I want to draw it out as long as possible. It was just that good. What an incredible story.

Tenleigh Falyn has not had an easy life. She lives in a small, poverty-stricken town with her sister and her mother, but her mother is mentally ill. She works hard in school so she can earn a scholarship that will help her get out of town and go to college.
Kyland Barrett also has not had an easy life. His only goal is to earn the Tyton Coal scholarship so he can leave the small town and never look back. He intends to leave whether he wins the scholarship or not.
When Tenleigh helps out Kyland one day, she ends up losing her job. From there, they start to talk and become friends. Neither wants to fall in love, not when they both intend to leave town and are vying for that coveted scholarship.
Tenleigh and Kyland were so similar. They both had hard lives with no parents to help them. But they found genuine friendship with each other, and they truly understood each other. There was a certain part where I was almost one-hundred percent sure that Kyland was lying, but I still felt the pain Tenleigh was going through. And wow, Kyland. He fell so hard. He was so so determined to get out of their town, get away from all his painful memories associated with the town, but once he fell for Tenleigh, that was it.
While some events were predictable, I could not predict everything, and Kyland really did the absolute most. I swooned. Seriously.
This book was emotional and heartbreakingly beautiful. It was angsty and full of love and healing. It was my first full read of a Mia Sheridan book, but it will definitely not be the last.
