Mia Sheridan has a way of reaching me emotionally with her writing and she has done it again with Kyland. When a book can just stop you in your tracks, break your heart, shock you, and put the pieces back together, that’s my favorite kind of book.
Kyland and Tenleigh are two kids growing up in small town Kentucky hidden away in the Appalachian mountains, in the same poor neighborhood, who are trying to get out by any means possible. Things get complicated when for the first time they both have something to fight for and something to lose.

Super cheesy.
Love making scenes were dull.
Way too focused on extreme depth emotions than what I want in a romance. I prefer passion and adventure, not so much wallowing.

Kyland by Mia Sheridan
Standalone NA in the Sign of Love Series
In these days of 24/7 internet accessibility, its so much easier to forget the people you never see, the people who can’t afford a computer or cell phone, or internet, or very often, the electricity to power any of it. Sure, we see the homeless people, but they are in cities, and they are the anomaly. We see it in third world countries, but that’s so far from home. But today there are small cities and towns across America where poverty is the norm.
We hear the words “hillbillies” and think rotten teeth and married to their cousin. But the fact is, these people have so little, they grab at any chance of happiness in this life. They help each other even when they have nothing to give.
Kyland is set in this world, a small Kentucky mining town that lost half of their good men in a mining accident. They live in trailers and shacks, and with few businesses it means few jobs. The kids still walk six miles to and from school because cars are a luxury nobody can afford. And they do have rotten teeth, because who cares about your teeth when you need to eat?
Kyland is a New Adult read. The couple is in their senior year of high school, which was a little difficult for me because my son its that age. I prefer not to read of characters that age, but with Mia’s writing it just doesn’t matter. Everything I have read of hers is pure gold.
“Half agony, half hope. Half pain, half ecstasy. Half grief, half joy. Half my downfall, half my savior.”
Tenleigh and Kyland grew up dirt poor. Both lonely, and ashamed of their situations, their only hope in this world is winning the coveted full scholarship awarded to one student every year. Tenleigh wants to see the ocean. She wants to go to school to help others, and become a teacher. Kyland just wants to get away from the sad, lonely, poor town, filled with heartache and loneliness, and become an engineer.
I’m going to leave here, Tenleigh. Nothing is going to stop me. Not you, not anything. Not anyone. Do you hear me? …
I’m leaving this place behind when I go. Everything about this place. Even you.”
“Okay,” I gasped. He paused for one brief second, his eyes flaring, and then his lips crashed down on mine."
Despite these kid’s hopeless situations, they had hope. But what they hoped for was the simple things in life, the we all take for granted.
What are your dreams? Tell me…"
“To see the ocean. To dance in the surf. To go to dinner in a restaurant. To have more than one pair of shoes. To get one of those store-bought birthday cakes with the pink roses in the corners. To get my mama a good Doctor who knows how to heal her…”
As hard as they tried not to fall in love because one of them would leave, they had a pure, beautiful love.
Tenleigh, don’t love me. Please don’t love me. I can’t stay here. Don’t love me.”

- •Mia’s beautiful writing grabs me every time.
- •The pure, selfless love.
- •How Mia can take a fairly depressing book in general, and fill it with hope and love.
- •How Mia changed me with this book. I need to do more to help people less fortunate.
- •The location, despite it's poverty, was beautiful, and Mia did an excellent job (as always) of creating a beautiful, very visual setting for the story.
- •As heartstring-pulling as this is, there was still some hot, alpha shmexing going on!
“I wanted to mark her, claim her, let everyone know that she belonged to me and only me.”
Dislikes:
- •Some of the lack of opportunities don’t really make sense. Maybe I’m ignorant, but doesn’t the government help at all? Why couldn’t they apply for other scholarships? There are so many out there!
Rating: 5 stars, 3.5 Heat

The Down and Dirty:
In this book world where billionaires and millionaires abound, it was lovely to see a true love that was still incredible to read about, in spite of the missing luxuries. You don’t have to be rich to love, but you do have to love that person more than yourself, something that this couple had in spades. Mia turned a bleak, desolate existence into a place of hope, of sacrifice, of survival and undying love. Kyland made you think. It made you examine your life. It made you realize how lucky you are. It made me want to help the world.

Parts of this book pulled on the heartstrings. The author has a way with words and some of the phrases had a lot of emotion in them. I liked the writing style. A few parts were cliche and cheesy but overall a cute story with emotional turmoil.
