This was a beautiful love story, one filled with heartbreak, struggle, grief, and even happiness. I love the way Mia Sheridan tells a story, especially one like this. She has a way of pulling at every emotion and her stories always leave their mark. Tenleigh and Kyland grew up dirt poor and both desperately determined to escape the lives they were born into, their only beacon of hope being a college scholarship that could change their futures. But while Tenleigh dreams of not only improving her own life, but also of those closest to her, Kyland’s tragic reality is very different to hers. Having lost everything he holds dear, he plans on leaving everything behind, all the pain, all the memories, all the despair, and on never looking back, at anything or anyone, especially a green-eyed girl whose smile makes him want to be a better person. But they fall for one another, completely and irreversibly, and even though they both know their love can't last, and doomed from the beginning, they cannot help but seize the only happiness that life has ever granted them, losing themselves in each other, and for once, daring to want something just for themselves. It's such a selfless love that each of them give freely, and I just loved the twists and turns and how much people will sacrifice for those they love.

“Half agony, half hope. Half pain, half ecstasy. Half grief, half joy. Half my downfall, half my savior.”

I absolutely love Mia Sheridans writing! This book felt so simple and easy to read while giving big emotions at the same time.

i just finish listening to the audiobook. i like this book. the moral story is very touching. especially about the destitute living condition in small part of USA.

however.... the titualar character, kyland, i feel bland. i wish there is more depth on his character so i can feel more heart wrenching of what he done for tenleigh.

instead i feel nothing. i even smirk on some of the plot twist and fast forward the audiobook.

it is a ok book. not so much fun as grayson's vow

I wanted to love this one so much. As a girl from Kentucky and someone who is familiar with Appalachia something about this one just didn't feel right.

Things I did love:
-Wanting to get out of your town. I very much understood how this one resonated with both characters. We want to be able to stand on our own two feet, but until someone gives you a chance you're only known by your family's accolades and what people have determined since you were a child. Kyland and Tenleigh both want
-Needing a friend through hardship. We've all needed someone to confide in, hold us up, and honestly just be a sounding board. I definitely felt like these two were there for each other and were going to be great friends.

Things that I didn't love:
-Constantly mentioning beauty. This is something that is very prominent in Appalachia but also in any part of the United States. However, it felt like a persons looks were constantly mentioned or that they were constantly pointing out someone's beauty. I completely understand this as a point to be made that looks fade and you need to rely on other ways to get out of poverty but it felt like beating a dead horse.
-the sexual moments between the main characters. I in no way shape or form believe that high school students are not out there having sex. HOWEVER, it felt like the steamier scenes were not something that a typical high school student or 17 year old would be thinking some of the terminology or descriptions were something out of a harlequin novel not a romance with teen characters.

I think that this is a novel that can go over very well but for me it just fell flat. While the Appalachia I know has poor communities, those communities also take care of their own and really sticks together. Additionally, the addition of phrases and situations like "Mountain Dew mouth" felt as if they were added in for shock value not actual value to the story.

I want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this re-release before it hits shelves.
