For me a large amount of my rating goes for how beautiful written I found the language. I haven’t seen the movie and I was so easily able to immerse myself in this world in Italy. I don’t think I would say the relationship between Elio and Oliver is an idealistic romance to be aspired to. I would say it seems to be a product of the time and environment. There is most likely more to their relationship than this, which is often discussed by readers but I believe I will need to think more on the topic before truly grasping it.

Beautiful. I haven’t read the movie so I can’t compare the two, but I love this book for what it is.
I loved the descriptions of Oliver and Elio’s time in Rome. Definitely transported me to those sleepless nights of my youth where I felt similarly. The ending absolutely wrecked me. I’m glad I got to be gay in a later time than these two. And I’m so glad Elio’s father was as he was.
