This book helps me understand thoughts I have about my hometown that I didn’t know I have or couldn’t articulate. Sometimes I felt as though I could have written some of this, albeit in different words with different stories. My own blogs over the years agonising my identity and sense of belonging echo parts of this book. I feel heard and understood.

Not sure how relevant this is for non-HKers, in the sense the author describes not merely if you live/d there. This is a book written for a very specific audience who needs no explanation of the cultural or political references.

lovely turns of phrase; much more personal than I expected! (even though it says memoir on the cover lol)

Each section is made up of lots of little essays and I'm struggling with the fragmentary nature of that, it's hard to settle in. May return to at some point but I'm in the mood to really sink into something!

IMPOSSIBle!

This was an okay book.

Not the most interesting memoir, but still a good book on Hong Kong.

I'd sooner recommend [b:Indelible City: Dispossession and Defiance in Hong Kong|59900414|Indelible City Dispossession and Defiance in Hong Kong|Louisa Lim|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1640059699l/59900414._SY75_.jpg|94317494]
... it also makes me think, what other "starts with i city" book can we write about Hong Kong?!
The Impermissible City
The Imposing City
The Infamous City

A brilliantly vivid, atmospheric portrait of life in HK and incredibly diverse in its tackling of both relatable (what home means, mental illness, complexities of family relationships, honest reflections on past regrets) and informative (realities of HK real estate market, international versus local schools, public healthcare system, history of protests, indie music scene) topics.
