Kudos to the author who I believe lived through a lot of what she writes about—huge amounts of empathy/care for those stuck in the middle of “bad luck” (as the book states) & seemingly never-ending conflict.

This made me feel like I was right in the middle of Belfast in the Troubles with them—truly transported me. A bit long, though, and parts with Michael and Cushla were so drawn out; I got sick of that storyline. Would like to read more from this author!!

the main characters are so unlikeable, that it's hard for me to care about what anything happens to them

a very quiet and depressing read, but i enjoyed it. historical fiction with a pinch of daddy issues and loneliness—but make it belfast, 1975. made me cry!!
