The website I was using to listen to the story stopped working 😭

I liked it though! Especially the parts about Lorde’s childhood.
I thought her recollections about her childhood were very insightful.

I’m so grateful that I was assigned this book in my Contemporary Queer Literature class. I have been meaning to read the works of Audre Lorde for a while, and I’m so glad I finally read Zami. It contains some of the most beautiful, thoughtful, challenging, descriptive prose I’ve ever read. It’s both deeply personal and deeply relatable in many aspects. Lorde leaves no stone unturned as she looks back at her life in the 30s, 40s, and 50s. We learn lessons right alongside her, and she is an excellent teacher and storyteller. This is an absolute must-read for anyone who wants to know more about queer history, Black history, feminism, and so much more. Her deep-dives into intersectionality are invaluable. You won’t be able to put this book down.

Please heed all the many, many content warnings I and others have tagged.

Lorde's story is very, very inspirational, and there were quite a few moments that genuinely, genuinely hurt - on top of that, she does write absolutely beautifully. I personally didn't love this book, I think because it was a little too slow paced for my liking and didn't seem to deliver much of a coherent message, but that's very subjective to me - I am very, very glad that Lorde wrote the way she did, and about the subjects that she did, at the time that she did.

Audre Lorde has a wonderfully rich, sensual way of writing. I feel she invites you in to her musings and explores her story and trauma with the reader. Personal in a different level from a regular biography. It almost feels like you are reading one of her extended essays. Her acknowledgement and appreciation of the divine feminine comes through in all aspects of her biomythography, as well as the struggles of growing up in a segregated America as a black lesbian.
