What a way to start my reading year! This is such a stunning exploration of success, redemption and story telling. I loved these characters a lot, including the cat!! I genuinely laughed, cried and gasped multiple times. Not to mention the beautiful art style. If you’re hesitating, just pick this up immediately, you won’t regret it!

What a stunning masterpiece this was!
The story felt like a true story and a foreign film all at once - it gave me sad, retired Tony Stark vibes mixed with a bit of Rocketman/Elton John feels thrown in there too.
I admit, I was expecting more of a queer love story subplot in regards to Julien and François, especially considering Julien makes such point of saying that this isn't his story. I would have liked to have seen more of François' side - maybe, idk as a MOVIE...?? *side eye glance* because this would make an exquisite film. Oh, it'll break your heart, but it would be amazing nonetheless.
And then we have the ART. Oh gods, the art is absolute chef's kiss. I adore it! Please check this book out for the art alone, because it's absolutely worth it.
Special shout out to Maurice - I need a hug with this cat immediately. "He looks like an idiot" NO, he looks like an ANGEL, Julien!
Oh and Sophie's Ballad actually exists?? As in, the author COMPOSED a song as well as a novel, and you can listen to it on Spotify, or even play it yourself because there's SHEET MUSIC AT THE END. I mean geez, talk about talented. (I think I need a moment before my heart can deal with listening to it though...)
This will be in my top books of the year for sure.
5 stars!

Amazing illustrations and a good story of redemption! And listening to the song on Spotify was a nice touch.
This story was so rich and engaging and the art was wonderful. I was very impressed by this and I wish all graphic novels were this great.
