I loved this book. I especially appreciated that the moment I wondered "where are the trans dragons" was the moment the trans dragons showed up.

While the initial premise drew me in, this book really failed to deliver for me on multiple levels.

The metaphor was MUDDY to say the least. It felt like a clown car of a literary device, and left me feeling like NONE of the intended meanings ended up properly conveyed.

The writing, while attempting to address issues of gender discrimination in 1950s and 60s America, made little to no attempt to take an intersectional view of feminism

In addition, the world building felt painfully inconsistent. The internal logic left much to be desired in more ways then one. I would not recommend this book.

Although I do think the end of the book could have stood to get a haircut of about 50 pages or so (typical youth fiction author feels the need to play out the entire lives of her characters) the book was an interesting foray into magical realism, with some really difficult hit-too-close-to-home moments and some beautiful passages toward the end. I wish the author had spent more time with the dragons (and clearly, she wanted to, hence the drag toward the end) but what time we did get was lots of fun.
