So my first review and rating of 2023!

Okay, first off, I am glad I started this year on a high with such an amazing book. The world building was exceptional, but the main characters? They were so so good. Tadek was a hilarious irritant, and Kadou was simply adorable with hidden qualities that emerged later. But I loved Evemer's character the most, he was so deep and unexpected, and didn't turn out to be anything like what I had pictured. I flew through this, and enjoyed every minute!

I had to finish 75% of the book before I truly started to enjoy it. There is a lot of build up! Overall a good story, I just had a hard time enjoying it

I don't usually read romantasy at all so this was surprisingly good.

Many other reviews are mentioning how the non-romance plot was a little thin and obvious, and I would mostly agree. I think it's developed enough to give the main characters some conflict to react to so we're not just watching them struggle internally the whole time. I wish the fantasy element had been a little more present throughout, as is it's just Earth+.

I really enjoyed Kadou and Evemer's relationship development and watching them slowly discard their initial perceptions of the other. I wouldn't call this an enemies-to-lovers though because they aren't really that aware of each other before the book begins.

I am a little irked that this book did nonbinary genders in the same way as all the other hip fantasy novels. There's a third set of pronouns but only the most minor of characters use them and there's never any visibly AMAB nonbinary people floating around. They always mention breast bindings somewhere.
