Brilliant, propulsive little book - but suffers from its own success to an extent, and leaves us no time to breathe with any of these excellent characters. At times it becomes a little too obviously converted from a screenplay, and I miss those moments of down time which McCarthy is so good at - even Child of God had breathing room in half the word count.

What a book. What a villain. What an introduction to one of America’s greatest writers.

When young we face the world with brash arrogance. Thinking we understand it. Believing that bending it to our will is as simple as reaching out and grabbing it by the horns. Consequences be damned.

When old we realize the world does not bend. And in fact, it never did. But that’s a scary thought. One that starts to make the life we’ve lived and decisions we’ve made feel pointless. So to cope, we convince ourselves instead the world has changed. That this new generation has set us on a darker, more uncivilized path. Why? Well, it’s easier to blame the youth than to accept that the world has always been, and will always be, unruly and unpredictable. Random and cruel.

Welcome to Nihilism. Welcome to McCarthy.

The choices of telling and not showing were a bit bothersome to me. But, the more I think about it, the more it’s intentional, thematically. Very interested to see how the film chooses to give us information.

The ending was a bit anticlimactic for me. But, the ride was awesome.

This book makes my partner’s obsession with true crime more understandable. I am so intrigued by Chigurh. His relentlessness. His way of toying with people. Especially the convenience store.

Bell’s infatuation with the past reminds me of today’s Fox News viewers. Blind to see our country’s history has always been violent.

I found the book to be comprehensive and fast paced. Just wish I had gotten more on the characters I liked more.
