It got a lot better towards the ending, will definitely be reading the second book
This is the first book in the HayTay series and I read the second one first. Both books could be read as stand alone books, but it was nice to have some information filled in after having already read the second book (Dying to be Her). The main characters are likeable and you quickly become invested in their history and want to see them succeed. With many twists and turns throughout the story, it makes you continue to flip the pages to find out what happens. If you enjoy easy to read thrillers, this is for you.
This review was originally posted on Star Crossed Reviews I received this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to Bookouture for my copy of this book via netgalley and for letting me take part in this double tour. I'm a big fan of Gregg's work so I was excited to read this series.
This book has a different take on a crime novel. Most crime books follow the detective and their investigations this book focused more on the Ryan twins Hayley and Taylor. I really liked the twins. I think they have good hearts and really want to help people. I think their gifts are cool and I would definitely love to see more of them.
There was a lot of mystery in the case od Katelyn Berkley. I found it was really hard to guess what has happened to the poor girl. As the story unravelled I just felt like this was such a sad story and while this is fiction it was based on real-life events. The story is full of blind alleys and wrong turns. Gregg kept me gripped throughout.
I would class this as a YA thriller so there is a lot of teenage angst and high school drama. I personally don't mind that. I read a lot of YA anyway but some might find this irritating. This was a republication of a book written 10 years ago. there was no indication of when this book was set. If you didn't know when it was originally published then some elements seem quite outdated in terms of technology. This could be easily fixed by adding in some context around the time period or adding the year at the beginning.

It’s Christmas Day when 15-year old Katelyn Berkley’s mother finds her dead in the bathtub, electrocuted by the family’s espresso machine. The coroner rules her death as accidental, but Katelyn’s childhood friends, twins Taylor and Hayley, believe it could be murder. Possessing psychic abilities, they begin to decipher messages from the deceased girl that will lead to the truth. But someone out there is watching them. Stalking them. Katelyn’s death has reopened wounds from a tragic accident years before. What a nosy reporter uncovers about the past may put the twins in danger. The result is a story you won’t see coming.
Deceptive, unsettling, and deeply creepy, “Beneath Her Skin” serves as the latest proof that author Gregg Olsen isn’t capable of a bad book. Paranormal suspense isn’t my thing. Had I known that about this book going in, I’d probably have skipped it. But by the time I realized it, it was too late. I was hooked. The characters, of which there are many, are well-developed, vivid, and quirky. Each of them raises suspicion. With the exception of the twins and their parents, that is. Yet, even they have secrets you’re anxious to discover.
Moving along at a steady pace, the plot seems simple and straight-forward. After becoming a victim of cyberbullying, Katelyn’s personality changed. Who was bullying her? Was her death an accident, suicide, or murder? As compelling as the story is, it seems somewhat obvious and easy to figure out. But beware of how things seem! “Beneath Her Skin” is a roller coaster disguised as a Sunday drive. Just when you think you’re cruising down a peaceful country road, the bottom drops out from beneath you. Shocking only begins to describe it. The story isn’t what you think. Neither is the true mystery.

When the body of troubled teen Katelyn Berkley was found in her bathtub, the small town of Port Gamble was shaken. On the surface, her death appeared to be a cry for help gone wrong, but twins Hayley and Taylor Ryan didn’t think so. Being gifted with the abilities to ‘hear’ the dead, the twins received a message from Katelyn and soon they suspected everyone in Kingston High, from popular cheerleader to the class outcast.
So, I didn’t realise this was a YA thriller. Originally published as ENVY in 2011, this new edition has been re-edited. The
premise was so promising, but I wasn’t into the high school drama aspect of it. I was quite intrigued with Hayley and Taylor’s ‘gifts’ though. It was clear from the beginning that the book was a set up to a bigger story universe for the girls.
Even though I’m not usually a fan of YA thrillers, I thought the ending of this one was done quite well! The narration was also well done - so easy to fly through the book. It also added to the fun that I was reading this around Christmas and New Year, and that was also the setting of the book.

So this was my first Gregg Olsen mystery book. I was sucked into this book so quick. There was mystery inside the mysteries. I loved the twins. I feel like there were many realistic families. I usually don't care for high school mystery or drama, but this was written so well.
The audio book was well narrated. I was able to understand everything that was said and the reading didn't detract from the story. It made it better
I received a copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

I did not realize that Gregg Olson also wrote fiction and I am very happy that he does that just as well as he does nonfiction! I really liked his take on the paranormal aspect of the girls' abilities and I want to learn more about it. How did it happen? Why all the secrecy around the accident that they were in? Tell me more!

This started so good! The last 10% lost me a little bit and left me a little confused. Maybe I will have to go back because the majority of the book was really good! Fast paced and interesting, I had no idea where it was going to go but was sucked in to find out. Overall it was really well written and I enjoyed it a lot!
