4,5 beautiful stars to this majestic beast of a book. I donโt think thereโs anything better for me than discovering a new favorite within the PNR/fantasy romance genre, so I'm really happy I can add Kingdom of Exiles to my new found favorites and that I just experienced a most wonderful reading experience. I LOVED every single second spend reading this story so insanely much.
The world is so immensely interesting with these so called Charmers and their magical beasts and all of the other added fantasy/magical elements like Not and his band of โrisen from the deathโ assassinโs who control darkness and shadows. What a truly wonderful journey this was and I am so sad that Iโll now have to wait until February 2020 before Iโm able to read the next installment and return to this world. This is a world I could spend forever in, these characters are ones I want to spent time forever with and the magical writing is one I could keep reading forever. Iโm already looking forward to re-read this book when Iโve literally just finished it, so thatโs the best sign I could get haha.
As a huge PNR fan, I really couldnโt be happier with how this story turned out. This first book in the Charmers series has rapidly made itโs way to my favorites first-book-in-a-PNR-series-list. This was truly such a wonderful start of a new series. I loved the โtypicalโ build up of this story and world building that you come across in a lot of PNR/fantasy romance read, and I specially love how the author then also gave her own twist on it all. I loved getting aquatinted with all these super interesting magical beasts, I loved the sort of quest the characters go on and the forming friendships as well as the forming (slow burn) romance. The set of characters is wonderful and I am so excited to read more about all of them.
CONCLUSION
This book basically has everything present that I could want for in a PNR, so I couldnโt be happier about that. The only reason I didnโt give it an entire 5 star rating is because it was mostly always predictable to me. I donโt mind that though, because a lot of books (no matter which genre) are predictable. And as long as the depth and development of a story as well as the characters and writing is so well executed as in this book, I donโt mind it one bit but I canโt give it a full 5 star rating. But really; Iโm so excited and happy that this book turned out to be one I fell in love with. I was so excited to read this one and when Iโm That excited, Iโm also always a little afraid of the book not living up to its expectations, you know? Thankfully, this one did live up to itโs expectations. I really canโt wait to see what more this author has in store for us. I am hooked to her writing, I am hooked to the magical world sheโs created and the set of amazing characters that had me falling in love hard. I want MORE MORE MORE!
Highly Recommended - Must Read
This is one Iโd definitely recommend, as you mightโve guessed haha, to anyone who loves a good PNR! A perfect book to pick for fans of Amanda Bouchetโs Kingmaker Chronicles or Gena Showalterโs Lords of the Underworld for example. Still need to know more about why I fell in love? Hereโs my checklist:
- Uniquely Magical Beasts that you want all for yourself > CHECK
- A group of sexy โrisen from the deathโ Assassinโs who have your heart doing funny things in your chest and leave you a drooling fangirl mess > CHECK
- A truly wonderful and intense slow burn romance thatโs so beautifully developed > CHECK
- (Dark) Magical elements present like the super awesome dark magic the Assassinโs possess to name one. Or the amazing abilities the Beastโs possess > CHECK
- A good amount of Action & Adventure that had me flipping the pages so fast I couldnโt stop reading the book until I was finished, well after midnight > CHECK
Iโm truly sad I am finished reading this book, because I donโt want to depart with this world. I wish the author was already done writing this series, so I couldโve binge read them all back to back hihi. Fan-freaking-tastic is what this book is! Over and out.

This book starts out like a roller coaster with hydraulic propulsion. It's straight into the action, and it never relents from there. And in spite of that, the world building and character development are rich and complex without being overwhelming. I loved Leena and Noc, both individually and together. The secondary characters were fun and added much to the story. And of course the menagerie of beasts at Leena's disposal added a whole bevy of characters, from fearsome to adorable, and they weren't there strictly for decoration. Maxym made great use of the different beasts that she took the time to enumerate.
From around 75% I was seriously concerned that there was too much story left to wrap up in the space of the book, but my concerns were misplaced. The climax of the book through the end is fast paced but satisfying. This is clearly the first book in a series, but I didn't feel like the book left me hanging on any of the arcs that were important in this book. I am eager to get the next book though because I'm very curious to see where this story is going, and I want to spend more time with these characters and in this world.

Kingdom of Exiles was amazing, I could not put this book down. Once I started it, I read it all in one sitting, with the exception of eating food as fast as I could so I could get back to it. It had some of my favorite things: found family, resisted attraction and, more importantly, animals! (Well, beasts. You get what I mean) And it features a queer M/F couple!
This book has a fast paced, both with the action and the romance; Noc and Leena have an almost instant attraction and chemistry with one another (and no, I don't mean instalove). I wasn't sure how I was going to like that at first, but Martineau turned their relationship into longing stares with both characters trying to resist things at first and it was done so well.
I loved all of the characters and beasts in this, except for the ones I was supposed to hate, which were also great but for different reasons. I did end up liking most of the members of the Cruor who travelled with Noc more than him, even if some of them took longer than others did.
There was one thing tossed in at the end that didn't quite add up about the bonds between the charmer and their beasts, but I'm assuming that part of that may have been because I had been reading an ARC, not the final version.
If you like Pokemon, found family, badass ladies and/oor animals, this book is for you!

For once in my reading history, I didnโt feel connected to the characters. I liked Noc, Leena, Oz and Calem, but I mean beyond that... I just didnโt buy in. Especially to Noc and Leenaโs connection, it just fell a little flat for me.
Not sure Iโll read book 2. I have other books on my shelf I am itching to read so I may just skip it (if I can fight the urge to complete a series I didnโt dislike, that is).

Kingdom of Exiles is set in a magical world, where charmers can tame different beasts that also has different abilities. Leena is one of these charmers, but has been exiled from the charmerโs city and lives by selling beasts. One day assassinโs are sent after her, she fights her assassin and demands to see their leader. That is when she meets Noc, they go into a deal: she will provide the assassinโs guild with four beasts and they will not kill her.
This is a book that a wonderful world, I enjoyed every worldbuilding I got. It was just too bad that it was overshadowed by all the romance. I donโt hate romance or anything, but this was way too insta-lovey for my tastes. I wish the book had more of a plot focus, and much more of the world the author has created. There was also way too many predictable storylines, where nothing ended up surprising me. However, the book was still entertaining and I had some fun with it! 2.25/5 stars.

Great characters, great settings and a great story are all involved in the making of KINGDOM OF EXILES.
KINGDOM OF EXILES started off a little slow, but I had no problem getting into it with the great world building and action packed storyline. There was plenty of mystery and some romance as well. I really enjoyed learning about the different beasts and their roles in Leena's life.
I will definitely read more.
