I thought I would like this, the world is quite fun but everything is so predictable throughout, I did not get into it and DNF at 60%

This magic system is a spitting copy of Lucy Heartfilia's magic from Fairy Tail. That is far from a bad thing.
I really enjoyed the world and magic and all the adorable creatures. It's pure fun, almost pokemon-like. (more digimon if you know that)
The romance is not a slow one, it was fast enough for someone to complain about it, but I found the story too interesting to really be too bothered.

A fun read. Full of adventure. Magic. Passion. Love.

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

This is just … bad writing. The plot sounded cool, the world could have been a fun place to explore, but the writing and characters are bad. Here’s why I won’t be finishing this book:

  • The character motivations are very obvious but also somehow muddied; that’s talent, but in a bad way.
  • There’s so much plot happening all at once, and how the author chooses to engage the reader on everything happening misses the mark for me. Information about the various conflicts, backstory and world building comes in weird, expositional chunks versus flowing naturally with the story. The plot begins in the middle of a LOT going on (she’s exiled; she’s being hunted by someone powerful; she was set up by an ex-lover; oh hey, here’s a bunch of rules and powers of her race/beasts; even though they are her reason for being and her main source of power, she sells them no problem. He’s an assassin; he’s dead (?) but reanimated (?); he’s cursed not to show affection to people without them getting sick and dying; but he’s also super concerned with his fellow assassins; contracts they take on will kill them if they don’t complete the job, but somehow this isn’t public knowledge) and it’s hard to keep everything straight. And that’s just the first 90 pages!
  • The characters themselves are real boring. She’s a sexually-confident person who ✨won’t get attached ✨ because she’s been hurt real bad, but also immediately is ultra-intrigued/more than just listing for the person who a) wants to kill her and b) extorts her for her supposed most precious resource of her beasts. He’s an undead assassin with a hidden heart of tortured gold because of a curse, but he really wants to care for/bang this person he is a) extorting and b) has made a contract specifically with a loophole so he can kill her. Overwrought, one-dimensional, and riddled with purple prose that doesn’t do the work of making me care about any of the characters.
  • The Assassin Bros™️ are unbelievable and boring ensemble characters. Their motivations, responses and characterizations don’t make sense (why are they all super nice to/making friends with a mark who seriously injured one of their own?) and they’re meant to be a buddy crew, but it falls incredibly flat.
  • There is a beast who’s sole purpose is to exude spa scents and be cuddled. Barf.

another exciting fantasy read! i think after reading the dance of thieves, this book really delivered.

kingdom of exiles has all of the aspects of a fantasy book that i love - adventure, conflicts, loveable character development and a sweet romance :) all these culminated to form a great mixture of thrilling love and adventure. i would say this is a high fantasy book, so there were many foreign terms that were hard to keep up with in the beginning. however, it was compensated by the enticing descriptions and great use of setting in the book. even though the book was very imaginative, i did not have much problems forming images of the places, characters or beasts in my mind. to me, strong description is essential in a good fantasy book and this book delivered just that.

i really like the characters in this book. each character held a different energy and demeanour and the multiple POVs that we were granted throughout the book really helped to bring the characters to life. of course, the book zero-ed in on Noc and Leena's POVs as the book does mainly revolve around this pair. i think their romance was nicely-developed although in the beginning, it did feel a little bit like insta-love (if i recall correctly). to me, that was the only somewhat unrealistic part. however, i think the slow burn and tension was written well!

overall, this book is a great read if you are in a reading slump (as with all fantasy books) as it has great characters, great plot and a fast pace to accompany it.
