Alexa, play Yellow Submarine.

Ahh, to experience Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, to live life vicariously through the eyes of Professor Aronnax as he explores the oceanic world with Captain Nemo of the Nautilus. Escapism doesn't get much better than this (especially for books written in the 1800s).

Pros and Cons of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea:

Pros:
♦︎ This book is in its own league in terms of innovation and imagination for its time.
♦︎ It's fun, and fairly digestible.
♦︎ You're really gonna impress someone by having read this. Probably your Literature Professor, definitely me. Go ahead and give yourself this brownie point to score for future sophisticated company.

One of the old classics. I can imagine how this book, when it first came out, was considered an education for the young mind. Full of promise about the advancement of technology and discoveries yet to be made.

This book is very much a product of its own time and  is off course now very outdated. A few examples: There are only male characters. The main character is full white colonial and never questions his ‘right’ to step foot anywhere. He never speaks with the boat staff, it simple doesn’t cross his mind to have conversations with ‘servants’ as an ‘accomplished gentleman’. His words for native inhabitants of the lands he visits are exactly what you might imagine.

But don’t let these things stop you from exploring the magic of the undersea. This book still has much to offer, not in the least as a window into a time in history. Because even though the story is fabel, it is mostly set in the real world.
