An important story told in beautiful language which rings true. A worthy choice for the Newbery from any year. This is definitely a story I hope to share with my children one day.

This was so well written and absolutely heartbreaking. I’m glad this story is being told.

REQUIRED READING
I had read this book before, sometime in late elementary or early middle school, and remembered enjoying it, though I couldn't recall the story line. Now I remember.
Taylor's novel takes place in Mississippi in the 1930's, centering on Cassie and her family. Naive at first of the prejudice against her family, Cassie and her brothers soon learn that though an end has been put to slavery, the hatred and racism that allowed it has not disappeared. As Cassie grows older she learns more about the real world outside her sheltered home, and learns when to fight it, and when not to.

Eh.. I read this in middle school, and then recently re-read it at a friends request. I don't remember if I liked it then, and this time.. It probably doesn't help that I read it directly after The Book Thief, which I loved... But it was just ok. I don't know who I would recommend it to... It just didn't work for me.

An absolutely brilliant book. Out of all the books I studied in school this was definitely my favourite, definitely one book I would read for a non-educational purpose.
It had such a brilliant tale and was all based on some sort of reality.
