Not my fave King book, I found the pacing a little funky, some of it developed way too slowly and then some of it was way fast. There also was a storyline on incest that just was ick, but I get that’s part of the story.

A different sort of story than the usual King , and a bit too many clichés for my taste, but unsettling nonetheless. Also in typical King fashion, a slightly underwhelming ending, though the build-up and tension were absolutely fantastic. The typical straight male gaze as well as the racism and stereotypes was unnecessary and didn't add to the plot or world-building. Finally, is this the same Holly Gibney as in “The Outsider”, and if so: HOW is that possible?

On my journey to read all Holly Gibney books before diving into Holly. This was excellent. Usually I'm not a huge fan of the way King ends his books, but I thought this one was very effective and I'm looking forward to the rest of the trilogy.

Far from my favorite King book. It felt undercooked. Maybe Roland Deschain would have recognized Det. Hodges as a fellow Gunslinger, but I didn't find Hodges to be much a compelling character. "Retired cop investigates one of the only cases he didn't close" has been done to death, and despite his charbroiled personality, Hodges never felt as meaty as many of King's other protagonists. I also didn't really like how two women got fridged. Jerome is a bit of a stereotype ("model minority") and Holly is the most interesting character in the book but she doesn't make any real imprint on the plot until like halfway through.

Way too many racial slurs for a book published in the 2010s.
