I adore this story. However, the excitement and drama of the chess matches translate far better in the television medium.

the show was undoubtedly better than the book, but i think the books stands alright on its own, honestly. if i took out all the comparisons i was making to the netflix series, the book was actually very enjoyable (aside from the very obvious issues that are direct effects of the white, male author). and while that’s true, i do think my connection to beth that i made watching the series carried over to this book a lot, making her a more enjoyable character to read while i found her to be lacking depth in the book.

either way, i found the book to be perfectly pleasant to read; nothing more, nothing less.

"She decided not to take the offered pawn, to leave the tension on the board."

Intense and beautiful. I loved that passion and wellbeing were as important for Beth as study.

However, it's disappointing that Jolene, while endearing falls into several harmful trops including being the brash 'black best friend'.

It was a decent story. I listen via audiobook and stayed engaged. I have a limited knowledge of chess, but was able to understand the information with minimal difficulty. Worth reading in my opinion.

I started the show on Netflix and found out it was a book. I immediately stopped watching the show and borrowed the book from my local library. 'The Queen's Gambit' deals a lot with the game chess, and I don't know anything about chess. Even though I don't know anything about chess I didn't have a hard time reading this. I found it to be an entertaining read and I loved the characters. This story takes place I believe between the 1950s and 1960s and during that time, as depicted in this book, chess was a male dominated game. I liked that the main character was a girl who loved playing chess and went out and played against a bunch of men not caring that she was one of the very few females at the competitions. Beth wanted to be the best of the best in the world of chess and she succeeded! I highly recommend picking this book up!
