Well I did not expect THIS when I heard about diverse retellings of classics. I must say this really set me up with some high expectations for the rest of these because holy shit. Aminah Mae Safi continues to stun with her work.
This is a fictional take on the Third Crusades, a hypothesis of what would happen if a benevolent vigilante like Robin Hood took charge of diffusing the contested Holy Land.
While the book spent a hefty amount of time on the found family let’s collect strays and adopt them vibes (WHICH I LOVE) I was also so into the political side of things.
It’s slow paced and painstakingly well thought out in terms of motivations, adversity, hail mary escape plans and more. And the villain? Girl boss meanie? Sure. Was she still a vile asshole and wasn’t glorified? Oh hell yea. We love balance.

travelers along the way : a robin hood remix by aminah mae safi HAD to be my most anticipated book of the first half of 2022, and i bought it and read right as it came out and well. it's a bit of a disappointment.
don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic book with fantastic writing, you can feel the attention to research and details made, a bit overwhelming at time but lovely. the main character charming enough and the narrative choices are interesting. overall, i liked it and i would recommend it if you're up for a fun retelling with an all female cast (and 2 token trophy boys.)
(god, why do i always sound like i focus more on what i disliked rather that what i liked? i always sound like i hate everything i read.) i think, the negative point or at least the few bumps in the road for me where the lack of point of views from rahma's merry band : the book is written in 1st person which isn't a problem, if it's not something you like it'll be jarring at first but the writing is pleasing enough that you get used to it, the problem i have with it is that it solely focus on rahma's pov, you only get her pov and thus her companions have difficulties standing out, they are definitively complex characters but they never get to shine and will fade into the background more than anything and thus, it's hard to get attached to them because you feel like you hardly know them at all (thus it's hard to perceive them as a found family, it's a rag tag team for sure but hardly a found family imo).
in my opinion, i would have loved if the story switched between pov between characters at the very least.
my second bump is the rythm, everything speed up toward the end while it took so long to set up and meet all the characters, the story is interesting enough to keep you going despite the slow pacing but it does feel challenging at time.
it's one of those books where when you arrive at the end, you feel like the story just began and you need more, that's how i finished the book.
