The main character Ofelia was just not it, extremely sheltered so I get it but she just annoyed me

I loved Flowerheart so i was excited to read this one, but it left me disapointed. I wasnt as invested in the story or its characters.

The beginning was a bit slow to me but once they got to the castle and the mystery started unfolding I was hooked. The sapphic coming of age love story was so wonderful. The epilogue absolutely made this book for me, it was such a profound ending. I would love to see a sequel that goes more into the underworld storyline from the epilogue!

Thank you to Harper360YA for giving me the opportunity to review Where Shadows Bloom by Catherine Bakewell.

Ofelia has dreamt her whole life of entering Le Château Enchanté where life is perfect with beautiful gardens and extravagant balls and, most of all, a safe place from the Shadows. Lope is her sworn knight, her protector from the Shadows and any danger. When Ofelia’s mother goes missing she and Lope embark on a journey to find her mother and discover the mysteries of Le Château and find a way to vanquish the Shadows once and for all.

Overall this was a charming read. It reminded me of Once Upon a Broken Heart with its whimsical notions of court life with beautiful dresses and balls.

Ofelia is a child at heart but also extremely naive which was frustrating to read and did not endear me towards her. Lope is a strong stalwart knight (gave me Brienne of Tarth vibes) who will stop at nothing to protect the ones she loves. I gelled more with her as she basically has her head screwed on right and knows whats what.

The concept of the shadows gives the story a little umph but I did feel that it lacked the excitement. It did start to pick up for the last few chapters and the ending was rather beautiful.

A lovely read for those looking for a love story with knights and damsels in distress.
slow-paced

This wasn't terrible, just... lukewarm.
Would recommend for a 12/13 yo

Spoiler“I want to look at you for a thousand years,” I said, my voice pinched.
A grin spread across her normally solemn face. “Then I will live a thousand years for you.”
