This book was such a wonderful read. There are very few authors that can write characterizations in such a real way that you can't step back and see them as anything other than a fully realized person. I found myself becoming frustrated with Durkhanai at the beginning and then very invested in her growth as a person toward the end. She always felt real even when I was annoyed with her. The mystery is well done and I liked that even when given the information through other characters my doubts echoed and were tied to Durkhanai's.
The setting was beautiful and I loved seeing the world through the eyes of the main character. Her love of her home reflects the love that the author has for her own home.
This book is perfect for anyone who likes political intrique and build up of a mystery to the action and reveal at the end. I was so invested that I immediately picked up the next book.

Durhkanai was so naive, made so many stupid decisions, and gave me so much secondhand embarrassment. I also hate people who are unable to think for themselves and there was so much of that in this story. The prose of this novel is incredibly beautiful, and so it sucks that I hated every part of the plot. I might pick up the sequel because this ended in a cliffhanger, but I don't know if I can be bothered because I hated all but one character.

Ughh I keep bouncing between 4 and 5 stars!! This was a good read and even now as I reflect on the events of the book I can’t say if Dhurkhani picked the Lady or the Lion. The ONLY thing I can say with confidence is that he love was real and true and as strong as she was, she was just a pawn in the games of duty and revenge of her family. Like…EVERYONE had a plan, and my heart goes out to her for all the lies she been told and the things she STILL doesn’t know.
Moderate: Racial slurs
Minor: Sexual assault, Sexual violence, and Murder
