I enjoyed the writing of this book and Lucy is a very lovable main character. She is generous and forgiving of the faults of others. Forster illustrates how a person can think they know what they want without really understanding their own heart. I did find the love story to be rather hard to take- based on physical desire and brief acquaintance. Forster could have developed it a lot more in order to make it feel real.

I think this would have been more enjoyable to read, but the audiobook is really bad. It was obviously made decades ago and the narrator is a very posh man who does very stereotyped, breathy voices for the women which make them sound very silly. It ruined the book for me really, I wouldn't recommend.

This took me a really long time to get through for such a short book - lots of putting it down for weeks then picking it up for a few pages.
I can’t figure out exactly why it didn’t work for me, but I really did find myself getting bored. Enjoyed the writing style and the humour of it, and ultimately Forster is engaging with somewhat ‘radical’ concepts, but I think my issue was with the genre of the book.
It certainly doesn’t carry the charisma of a romance - the end couple were not engaging enough together, or perhaps there just wasn’t enough of them featured to make it an anticipated get-together. At the same time, though I feel social commentary was the goal, it didn’t quite approach the interesting topics it covered with enough gusto to make that the gripping factor.
A little of everything, then, but maybe nothing in enough depth? I didn’t dislike the book, glad I finished it, but I won’t pick it up again. Will try more of Forster’s work though!

- Pretty simple story about a girl who learns to love both another and herself despite her restrictive society
Not just a swoony romance, but a biting satire on the restrictions of Edwardian society.
