Laila Piedra is a young aspiring author who is a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to her work. She is also a big science fiction lover and a book lover. She feels more then happy to stay at home reading her favorite book or watching her favorite tv show The Rest. When a accident befalls one of her teachers, her class gets a substitute and her teaching style is less then stellar. Now Laila must try to impress this new teacher and not lose her confidence in the process.

This book was a 50/50 for me, even as I write this I am still torn about it. There were some parts of this book I liked and others that I didnt like. Most of the time I wanted more parts of this book to be explored or developed.

I saw myself alot in Laila, she was a aspiring writer with immense passion for her work and spent alot of her time in her room writing. She was also a bit of a nerd who loved science fiction and reading kinda like me. As a introvert I can safely say everything that Laila struggled with is true and we introverts dont really like to socialize or do things out in public too much. We are more comfortable in our own little places recharging our energy batteries for later. So seeing Laila try to get out of her comfort zone and try new things was good to see.

One of the things I liked was Laila's family and group of friends. Hannah was the most fascinating out of all of them but also at times didnt know when to be careful about what she said. This brings me to one of the things I wished we gotten more of and that's more of their other two friends Felix and Leo. I feel like compared to Hannah they were very underdeveloped and could have used more time to shine. The most we got from them was one was a space nerd and another was involved in a rivalry with another boy for a girls affections. But all of that ended abruptly too and really no resolution either.

The romance in this book was very well done and when we saw Hannah and Laila together it was very sweet and special. I loved how this book handled sex and sexuality. They didnt try to make it some glamorous all important thing. It was awkward and complicated but passionate and real. This book also shows how religious upbringings can affect a person's relationship with sex and their sexuality going forward. How some people are taught to feel shame or to hide it away behind closed doors. When it is a natural thing and everybody feels it and it should be something we talk about more especially with young teens.

There were alot of things that could have been done better and I wanted more of. Like the substitute, Mrs. Naseranko, she kinda faded to black toward the end and wasnt properly resolved and Laila's writing kind of faded out too toward the end. Not to say I hated this stuff but I just wish we got more of it.

I didnt regret reading this book I did really enjoy it and had fun with it but there were also some parts that I wish were expanded upon a bit more. Give it a try for yourselves you may have the same feelings or you may not but it doesn't hurt to give it a try.
