This book won both a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award for best novella! The book is set primarily on a space craft headed for Oomza University. Binti is the main character and is from the Himba tribe on Earth. She is a math prodigy and she is the first from her tribe to be accepted to Oomza U. Against her mother's advice Binti leaves her family to board spacecraft that will take her from Earthto Oomza.
The school itself is run by the Khoush, the pale-skinned Earthens. Most of the other passengers on the ship are Khoush and look at Binti as a bit of a curiousity. And then the ship is attacked by an alien race called the Meduse....

This is at its heart a story of accepting differences and learning to properly communicate to help advance harmony.

I definitely recommend this one!

This book counts towards the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge Task #17: a sci-fi/fantasy novella

I'm being a big girl and branching out to genres I know I don't typically enjoy because come on, there's gotta be something within those genres that I'll like. Somewhere! I'll find something! Binti made me feel a little better about sci-fi. Still not my favorite genre, but the idea of understanding other worlds or unfamiliar concepts is what usually scare me away from sci-fi, and that was not the case with this novella. Fast-paced, easy to understand, and just enough to the plot where it's not dragging but also doesn't leave the reader with a million questions. I'll take it.

Really surprised at how fleshed out Binti's world was considering how short this novella was.
Obviously there are aspects that could have been more fleshed out narratively but overall I really enjoyed it. A beautiful meditation on friendship and belonging.

Binti is such a beautiful story. It was so easy to immediately become immersed into the world created, and I loved every moment. I'm a huge fan of really traditional and heavy sci-fi and felt that this book was able to take such a fun spin on the genre, while also keeping those elements of fantastical worlds, technology, creatures and scenarios that make the sci-fi genre so much fun to look towards. Above all else, I loved the seamless blending of culture and identity into the story, and I was truly amazed at how much I cared for the characters, specifically Binti herself, in such a short time. The imagery was also really well done, and I found myself so happy reading this story, even though it's a little darker. This is science fiction at its best, and I'm beyond excited to continue the series!
