Read this with my daughter for a honor's History class for 8th grade. Not so bad very short but was More graphic than I thought it would be for a kid's book. But I think it gave a truthful experience of what it might be like during that battle.
Since my grandson has been reading this series and is loving them, I decided to read a number of these books. I am able to see why he likes the series so much! I would recommend these to children.
I read this one for my niece as well. Admittedly, I don’t love this series, but I appreciated this one. Tarshish includes many more historical references and addresses death and loss in a realistic, yet age-appropriate way. She also gives a frank assertion in her notes about the cause of the Civil War being about slavery and condemns the institution of slavery. It should seem obvious that someone does that, but we’ve all learned that folks will twist themselves in knots to provide other reasons for the war.

I enjoyed the change of perspective. Instead of the point of view being a young boy soldier. She has the book in the point of view as an escaped slave that was helping out the union. I thought it had a good plot with the story going into great detail about was going around Thomas and how things were back in the 1800s.
