This I Survived book doesn’t just talk about Gettysburg - it also addresses slavery. I think it’s a great first book for upper elementary kids to read to introduce them to the Civil War.

Nothing to say.

When your mom is a history teacher teaching the Civil War, you read historic fiction as a bedtime story. She wanted me to take a star off for it being scary, but it was interesting enough that she let me read her the whole thing in one sitting.

You can definitely tell this is a children's book, but I did enjoy it immensely, especially since it was told from the point of view of a young slave. Parts were a bit childish, but that's to be expected. I still found it worth the read and would recommend it to kids who don't mind the macabre content. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

My kids loved this book (we have been visiting battlefields) and my students love this entire series.
