DID NOT FINISH

I guess dnf-ing this book makes this year my year for dnf-ing books that suck instead of forcing myself to chug through them 😌

this book is the exact kind of bad that had me going to goodreads to see if anyone else has the exact same thoughts as me! tldr I hate this book. no book I read or dnf'ed in 2024 is as bad as this book, even if I said I hated those books at the time.
I had soooo many issues with this book:
1. the characters have no depth, no important thoughts, and no follow through of their rare thoughts.
2. their individual interests seem to only exist so that they have something to do together and don't actually seem to be integral parts of who they are as people. for example, james is a painter. this point is important a total of 3 times: one for her to get financially cut off, one for them to go to the museum, and one for her to have strength to talk down to him and turn a moment of possible character growth/mature discussion into a sexual degradation thing. what the actual hell. (also side note I feel like I waded through some deep waters but ultimately it was the degradation sex scene that made me dnf bc HUH???)
3. I do not have a single ounce of care for anybody in this book except for maybe the younger brother but I didn't read enough of the book to find out what happened to him.
4. the whole relationship is built on insta-love and sex. at no point up to the dnf point did they ever speak honestly to each other about how they felt about each other, but then suddenly they were in a relationship bc james said so to her friend, and then they never discussed it again. ALSO when james pitched the fwb the second time then suddenly she was down to sleep w ozzy without protection???? no actual mature adult conversations about it, and no asking for an std panel or anything. HUH???? did they skip sex ed and also any development of their prefrontal cortex???????? are they capable of rational thoughts?????
5. not a single part of me understands the purpose of the random bathroom c*ke scene. it served no purpose and made absolutely no sense especially since ozzy's backstory is rife with issues stemming from drug/substance abuse and he claims to want to be different from his parents.
6. has this girl never heard of therapy? she jumps from one abusive relationship straight into another very rocky and unstable relationship. AND she deals w a storyline that is in actuality a very heavy topic with serious mental, emotional, and physical repercussions, but it feels like this book set it up just so that she could have sleep sex. I am so disappointed.
