This is an excellent read! My only experience with Beast Boy was the old Teen Titans series on Cartoon Network, but this volume has really endeared him more to me. There's plenty of young adult depth with Beast Boy, and I'm excited to dive in further to see his crossover with Raven. As always, the art is superb.
In this sequel to the Teen Titans origin stories, we get to enter the world of Beast Boy. In the midst of facing anxiety about his body, popular kids at school, and animal rights issues Garfield Logan aka Beast Boy manages to save the day with his humor, wit, and maybe just a little bit of beastly help.
I absolutely loved this addition to our Teen Titan origin stories. The artwork in this series continues to be absolutely fantastic; Picolo is truly the best artist for the job and I particularly love how he assigns a color to each Titan and focuses much of the art around that color. In addition, I started reading this graphic novel and was shocked at the difference in character between Raven and Beast Boy. I felt like I was reading an entirely different author because the two were vastly different. I even thought while reading, "This is totally a dude book," and I did not have that thought while enjoying Raven. Now of course, some of the details of the plot stayed the same which helped connect the two existing origins thus far but overall I really delighted in the diversity. I appreciated all of the issues covered in this graphic novel that focused on what teens face today in high school. It's extremely important to talk about these kinds of issues and break the stigma that they are something to be ashamed of or topics to be avoided. I especially appreciated the zeal for animal rights: not only is that an important issue today but it is also completely on brand with our beastly friend. I think both our author and our illustrator work very well together and their combined talents will help make this series stand out. I am highly anticipating the rest of this series and look forward to when all of our young heroes are brought together.

I received a free copy from DC Comics in exchange for an honest review. The art is beautiful first of all. Secondly, the characters are interesting, the three main characters have a wonderful friendship. Also, there's a good storyline, especially when it came to the friendships, and standing up for animals. It was a well written and beautifully drawn/inked graphic novel! I can't wait for the next one - about Beast Boy and Raven. I read it so quickly. Highly recommended, whether or not you like Teen Titans. 5 out of 5 stars.

Love the teen titans and the expansion of Beast Boy as a character. He's well known to be half of the comedic relief duo but that is his role in the group. To expand on that, and explain how that impacts him as a person shows a lot of depth to him.
For the second book in the series the art is already leaps better than the first. On top of that, the way the artist portrays his powers in just really cool. 4/5 just incredibly fun.

Oh boy am I angry about this one. OH BOY.
Look, the main story is fun. The art is fabulous. But I absolutely cannot in good conscience rate this anything better than than a single star for the blatant, despicable and actual HARMFUL lack of research that went into this book.
I can appreciate animal rights activism. I have a BS in ecology and evolution because I care pretty damn deeply about the planet. But first, Kami Garcia started by basically stating that all animal research is evil, which is BLATANT misinformation spreading, and harmful to a huge amount of genuinely important research that goes on at universities (including my own...are you glad there is a vaccine to Polio? Because BOY HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU ABOUT WHERE THAT CAME FROM). And then. AND THEN! She goes on to show SUPPORT for PETA, one of the worst and most harmful organizations out there, an organization that mistreats and kills animals BY THE TRUCKLOAD. LITERALLY.
Ohhhh boy I am angrier than I realized about this.
Okay. Finally. The coyotes.
Coyotes are not bad guys, guys. They are timid. They travel and hunt alone or in pairs, NOT packs, and they are far more afraid of humans unless deeply desperate. Showing them here as rabid, vicious animals was about the worst thing Kami Garcia could have done on top of a whole bunch of garbage she'd already done.
I wanted to love this book. I love Teen Titans. I am FILLED WITH RAGE to see a Teen Titans book that handles animal rights issues - issues I care about a HELL OF A LOT - SO INSANELY BADLY.
Anyway, tl;dr: DO SOME GODDAMN RESEARCH WHEN YOU WRITE ABOUT THINGS YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND BEFORE SPREADING HARMFUL MISINFORMATION, FFS.
