Sooo, uhhh.... first of all, I did read the Raven graphic novel back when that came out, but I have such a black gaping void in my brain where the plot should be that I didn't even remember I'd read it until I checked on Goodreads. (Maybe a black gaping void is appropriate for a Raven novel?)
I liked Gar, but I didn't love him. He is focused on silly teenage obsessions with popularity and stuff, but he IS a teenager so I think he mostly gets a pass on that. I love his two friends, and while he is not a GREAT friend to them in this book, he isn't terrible either. He does TRY to check in and see how they're doing and show support for them by attending their events and uhhh, illegally freeing lots and lots of animals. It's not as though he completely ditches them for the popular people, ignores them, or refuses to acknowledge them. They're still his primary friends and they still hang out a lot.
I was more put off by how much Gar's parents didn't tell him. I mean, I think he needed to be mentally prepared in case something odd DID happen, and also prepared to recognize Slade on sight and know that he's a bad guy. Instead his parents' silence is now working as a lever for Slade to push on.
I'll most likely pick up volume 3 when I get a chance.
