I think you should definitely take this book with a grain of salt. I love all the topics she covers and data evidence, but it has too much of her own opinion and conclusions that I really don't think I agree with and that my doctor most likely wouldn't agree with. I wish I would have read this and brought up some topics in this book to my obgyn earlier in my pregnancy. But most information I found online anyway before reading it. If you want data, just look up the data. Idk if I would recommend this book

I am a data person, so I very much appreciated the approach of this book.  Emily Oster not only presented the data on common pregnancy and delivery topics, but she explains where the data came from, and conclusions she made.  She explains the choices she made based on the data, but goes on to say someone could look at the exact set of data and make a different decision.

I did skip the couple chapters that I felt didn't apply to me, but read the little TL;DR she includes at the end of the chapters.

The best pregnancy book I've read so far. This book is not fear based, and it's not trying to tell you what to do. It's just facts, and facts that let me take a deep breath!

4.5/5 Stars

I’m definitely on the more chill side of pregnancy when it comes to things like lunch meat, caffeine, working out, etc., so Expecting Better was a great read for me. The book presents a lot of actual data and highlights how many pregnancy recommendations aren’t based on in-depth research—some stem from small case studies or lack solid scientific backing.

Emily Oster does a great job of laying out the information and emphasizing that every person should make the choices that feel right for them while consulting their doctor. It’s refreshing to have a book that encourages informed decision-making rather than just following blanket rules. I’d definitely recommend this to any pregnant moms looking for a more data-driven approach!
