Overall it was an enjoyable read as far as children books go. I don't have much to say tbh, because I read Wicked just before and I think it made me completely biased. I'll just say one thing : f*ck The Wizard.

Dans l'ensemble, c'était une lecture agréable et un bon livre pour enfants. J'ai lu Wicked juste avant et je pense que cela m'a rendu plutôt partial. Je n'ai pas grand chose à dire, sauf : f*ck Le Magicien.

Great classic everyone should read at least once in their lifetime.
How marvelous!
Having never liked the movie much as a child, which unfortunately I encountered first, this is the first time I actually read Baum's charming tale. It is wonderful! I certainly wish I would have met Dorothy and her imaginative and faithful companions as a girl, rather than the stuffy world of Little Women. But I'm hooked now, and whenever I need a bit of inspiring childhood again, I look forward to reading the rest of the Baum series.

certainly very fun! i think the story is very charming, but as an adult there isn’t much specifically that stands out beyond the wizard. i think his deception is written so well and i’m obsessed with the character that baum builds for him. but other than that, this is just good fun.

Classic. I think I would have loved this as a kid too!
Also there is a lit more death then you would expect there to be in a kids book...

This is one of those really rare instances when the book is worse than the movie. Maybe my opinion is tainted by years of knowing the story one way ... but I honestly don't think so. It's strangely written (the yellow brick road is always called the "road made of yellow brick" ... it's just cumbersome!) and irritatingly simple. The group of travelers face many more trials than they do in the movie, but then they just overcome them. There's no build up or drama. It's always immediate resolution, which is quite unsatisfying. The only thing that IS better about the book is that the whole adventure makes a little more sense. In the movie, Dorothy meets Glinda the Good Witch when she first arrives and Glinda tells her to follow the yellow brick road to see the Wizard of Oz, who might be able to tell her how to get back to Kansas. But Oz can't tell her how to return, and then Glinda shows up again, with full details on how to get Dorothy home. Which just makes you wonder ... why was she holding back before? Is Glinda the Good Witch actually just a bitch? Well, in the book the witch in the beginning is the Good Witch of the North, and the witch at the end is Glinda the Good Witch of the South, who is more powerful than the northern witch. So at least no one was holding out on Dorothy. But it still begs the question, why did the witch of the north make Dorothy go see the Wizard of Oz, if the witch of the south was always the most powerful? It's just a ridiculous premise, really.
In summary, it's a frustrating book that is really better left unread. It really makes me wonder at the fact that there are many more sequels!!
