I didn't really care for it much. As far as the story goes, I respect its place in the classics of children's literature, but the movie was far better. It felt like I was reading an abridged version, though I was not, as there was little character development. But maybe I am expecting too much from a kid's book.

Upon a second reading I'm upgrading from 2 to 3 stars. I just read Wicked (which is awful) and I wanted to see how far the author strayed from the source material. The original isn't great but it's not bad. There is enough in the book that makes it unique and worth checking out for fans of the classic movie. I'll be curious to see where the series goes but I doubt I'd ever get around to reading it.

The Wizard of Oz is a fun children's book that follows young Dorothy and her dog Toto and their adventures in the mystical world of Oz. Basically, a travelogue following Dorothy and her friends as they explore the world of Oz meet it's many strange denizens and, quite by accident, defeat the evil witches that plague the land.
If you come expecting this to be like the 1939 movie you'll be disappointed. While all of the main points are covered relatively faithfully, this is tonally a very different kettle of munchkins. Like the fairy tales that undoubtedly inspired it. The Wizard of Oz is a little dark in places. While it is generally light and fluffy with mild peril, there are a couple of scenes with some beheading, and neck wringing that didn't make it into the movie. Those Brothers Grimm would be proud.

Me hubiera gustado leer este libro cuando era niña, no es que sea una mujer ahora, tengo 15 años pero sin duda veo el mundo de diferente manera y me hubiera gustado leerlo cuando tenía unos 6, 7 años.
Es un libro mágico, con una enseñanza preciosa y unos personajes magníficos.
Todo el mundo sabe de que se trata esto, pero les diré de todas formas.
El mago de Oz trata sobre Dorothy una niña que un día es arrastrada por el viento hasta el país de Oz con todo y su casa, esta cayó encima de una de las brujas malas de ese país, así Dorothy mata a esa bruja mala y todos en ese pueblo le tiene un eterno agradecimiento y como muestra de su gratitud le regalan los zapatos plateados (si son plateados, no se porque todos dicen que son rojos y hasta en la portada del libro son rojos) de la bruja mala que tiene un increíble poder que ella no descubre si no hasta el final.
Ella lo único que quiere es regresar a casa y para ello la mandan a la Cuidad de Esmeralda para que se lo pida al mago de Oz, en ese viaje ella va conociendo a grandes amigos que todos quieres pedirle algo al gran mago de Oz.
Conoce a un espantapájaros que quiere sesos, un hombre de hojalata que quiere corazón y a un león gallina que quiere valentía.
En este viaje se van a encontrar con adversidades que tienen que sobrevivir para exponer sus más grandes deseos la mago de Oz.
Pero ¿Será Oz tan sorprendente como dicen? ¿Les cumplirá sus deseos?

Fue una gran decepción saber la verdad del Gran Oz, sin duda no me lo esperaba, yo tenía la esperanza de que les cumpliera sus deseos pero al saber que era un farsante fue una gran decepción.
El final, aunque muy idiota si ya no tienes 5 años, me gusto, fue agradable ver como todos creían que tenían lo que querían cuando el poder en realidad esta en ellos y no en los sesos que les pusieron o en la valentía que según tomaron, esto demuestra que le verdadero poder esta en la mente. Y fue más agradable ver como todos tenían un futuro mejor que cuando conocieron a Dorothy.

Un clásico muy tierno pero muy repetitivo y aburrido en algunos aspectos, por eso tiene 4 estrellas.
Me hubiera gustado haberlo leído cuando tenía 5 años como dije al principio.
