holy fuck?!!? i loved the writing style so much. it felt very poetic and artistic—the use of personification was stunning. reading this felt like looking at a painting. and janet was a fascinating character. i do think this book did girlhood(as a topic) justice. it certainly represented my childhood well. but what i loved best was…. the ending. i think most authors struggle to stick the landing. not the case here. wow. that ending was fantastic. definitely recommend.

Utterly depressing in so many ways.

Gothic coming of age. This book had some beautiful lines, an interesting plot, and some wild characters. Great setting and atmospheric feel as well. It meandered a bit too much for five stars — even if the main character was a lot of fun. I feel like I got her and many of the plot points that she went through as she experienced adolescence and was just trying to understand life and her place in the world.
