I’m confused! I think this would’ve been a great book to study in school to be able to discuss the deeper meanings as I’m sure I’m just not understanding. It was very well written but her death is unexplained despite a reason being anticipated from the start. The way it was introduced at the beginning was as if she had done something to deserve it and therefore it was justified for her family to sweep her and her death under the rug. But reading the rest of the book, all she ever did wrong was be herself and she was clearly around the wrong people to do so.

Weird and wonderful, genuinely loved it and couldn’t put it down. It’s like a much darker, very Scottish I Capture the Castle. I thought the ending was a bit anticlimactic but I still loved it.
Last month's book club and I just could not get through it
Beautifully written. Bleak, but atmospheric and even funny at times. Incredible that this is the author's only novel. Would recommend for fans of We Have Always Lived in the Castle - I think Janet and Merricat would be fast friends.

Loved—very much in the tradition of the Brontë sisters. A quick gothic novel.
The main character was somewhat unlikeable & unique. I liked her connection to animals & nature, the way she remained true to herself, & her aversion to people & their societal expectations. But those were highlights in an otherwise rambling mashup of tedious tangents & esoteric literary quotes. This is marketed as a Gothic, dark tale but it’s not that interesting—it reads like memories from the author’s childhood mixed in with some Gothic elements. People seem to gush over this book, but I wasn’t enchanted, more annoyed by the storytelling style. I think the way it’s marketed puts expectations on it that were not fulfilled.
