I'm just not sure how to feel about this. Beautiful prose, fascinating characters, and some funny moments - along with a lot of horrible, depressing moments. It's like Gothic Lit Fiction and Coming of Age books made a baby.

My new favorite book! An abrupt ending I'm still pondering, but love love loved this Addams-family-set-in-reality vibe.

This was hard to get into, it felt a bit dense. But it was good. I was invested in the world

Definitely see the comparison to We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Writing was good but the book just wasn’t for me. Not a single likeable character in the thing

Janet is relatable at times, she's smart and funny, and she's also quite selfish. She seems to be surrounded by people who make no attempts to understand her yet she in turn makes no attempt to understand them. Understandably, she prefers literature, languages, and nature to the social pressures that surround her. It was wonderful to see her mind and how she connected with her world in an isolated Scottish castle.
