The fatphobia is just overwhelming and constant. The rest of the book is not compelling enough to make up for it.

Ooft this was a challenge, because I love Ottessa Moshfegh and I LOVE a delusional/obsessive protagonist who is descending into a little madness.

However, I couldn't cope with the repeated fatphobia and many stereotypical, flat characters that Vesta would imagine. I cringed when she suggested that her idea of Magda would have been a Russian mail order bride if she hadn't made it to America.

Unfortunately the fatphobia seems to be a reoccurring theme in Moshfegh's work, as the protagonist in My Year of Rest and Relaxation also idolised thinness and was disgusted at her friend for putting on weight.

I've just started Eileen, I'm hoping for a break from the fat-shaming.
