Although the plot is simple and involves 8 girls fighting in a women’s boxing competition, I enjoyed reading the themes of girlhood and female potential, emphasized by the story jumping to the past and the present during each girl’s fight and the epilogue pulling everything together. However, I did find the book as a character study to be lacking, as some of the characters blurred together and became forgettable.

Longlisted for the Booker and a finalist for the Pulitzer (an obit notation @beth_golay stated!), I had listened to this audiobook, back when @suzperezict recommended it last year. I really liked Cassandra Campbell's narration and was so grateful to @prhaudio for the #gifted access.

This is book that centers around the young women engaged in a boxing tournament. It is as sharp and visceral as you might expect, with only 207 pages, each sentence packs a ... well, punch. (Sorry!) It truly is a well written book that answers the questions of: "What kind of girls would box? What drives them? Where do they go after this?"

The structure is nonlinear and focuses on each boxer as they have their bouts. We get to see what makes them tick; what pressures they feel, and the narrative goes from the match to before to long after in easy transitions.

It was truly fascinating. It was also a really cool book. I loved the insight into these teens and the forward glances of what this time of their lives meant, or didn't. It was not drawn out, but kept the pace with the tournament structure, moving through the eight participants until the winner is crowned.
