The snapshot style of writing was a bit off-putting at the start but I liked it more as I continued. Each match were two contrasting in-depth character studies of the girl boxers that extended to their futures as well. All 8 girls were written intricately different. It’s a pretty quick read.

Part propulsive story and part stream of consciousness, this short novel takes place over the course of one weekend and a series of head-to-head matches in the world of women's boxing. Each chapter is a pairing in a tournament. When we are reading through a fight, the voice is bouncing back and forth between the two fighters in a stream of consciousness style. We learn where each girl comes from, how she became a boxer, and more importantly, what she carries with her into the ring. We also get a glimpse of the boxing world, particularly women's boxing, which is something I know nothing about. The story felt fast-paced because I wanted to get through each round and to the end. Reading each match created tension, like I was there and bristling with each hit. This was also deeply moving as an exploration of the complexity of these athletes.
